Water Damage Solutions for Internal wall Water Damage

Water damage is a common and sometimes devastating issue for the house and the inhabitants of the house. Many things could cause water damage in your home, which we will cover shortly. Let’s say you have a burst pipe in the kitchen, you get a plumber in, and they fix the pipe. You sop up the water that had gathered on the floor beneath, and you think all is well, so you put it behind you. Then, as time moves on, you start to notice the signs and symptoms of water damage appearing. Everything looks fine at first blush, but that’s certainly not the case. The dangerous thing about water damage within a wall is that it can grow, spread, and deepen so much beneath the surface, and before you know it, this once minor issue has become a significant problem that must be addressed.

So, in this article, we’re going to take you through the two most common scenarios of internal water damage; if your walls are insulated and if they are not. So you’ll know how to best tackle these two water damage restoration processes.

What causes water damage to walls in Scarsdale?

There are lots of different reasons why water damage may be prevalent in your home in Scarsdale. They scale from small issues like a leaky water in Scarsdale dehumidifier to extreme situations like a flood brought on by a natural disaster. In either case, water damage can make its way into your home, and once it’s in there and left untreated, it will only continue to grow.

Other causes may be:

In all of these cases, it doesn’t take long for your house to start soaking up the excess water. It quickly gets into your walls, floors, and carpets and spreads.

Water Damage Solutions – Signs to look out for

The symptoms and impact of water damage will vary, depending on the location, extent of the issue, and surrounding materials.

Here are some of the common signs to look out for:

  • Warped or mishappen walls
  • Floorboards or linoleum that starts to warp and lift
  • Excess condensation on surfaces
  • Mold or mildew growth
  • A musty, dank smell with no evident cause
  • A sudden unexplained spike in your water bill
  • Pools of water, dripping or damp surfaces
  • Paint that starts to peel, flake, or bubble
  • Yellowish stains on your walls, ceilings, or curtains

Water Damage Solutions – The general drying process

The faster you can address this, the better for you and your home; living in a damp house is not ideal for the human body.

The general drying process looks a little something like this:

  1. Fix the root cause
  2. Remove wall hangings such as photos and paintings
  3. Remove skirting, architraves, and wallpaper
  4. Open all possible windows and doors in the house to ventilate and dry out the air
  5. Use fans and dehumidifiers to aid the process
  6. Assess any repairs
  7. Prevent again mold growth

How water damage restoration professionals dry out wet walls

Now, if you’ve come here looking for DIY water damage solutions, you’ll certainly find some direction. But, in almost all cases that are anything beyond minor leaking appliances, it’s best to call in a professional water damage restoration team to address the whole issue and prevent future problems.

Now, a closer look at the two different scenarios you could be dealing with.

If your walls do not have insulation

If this is the case in your home, it’s generally much easier to dry out the water damage within your walls. A restoration operator can place their industrial-strenth air movers roughly every 10 to 14 feet along the affected area, directed at the wall.

Additionally, they will use a refrigerant dehumidifier near the most affected area. If the affected area spans a wide area, they may use two or more. These help to dry the area, reduce humidity, and prevent mold.

If further water damage solutions are required, your restoration operator will drill small holes into the sill plate (the framework that rests directly on the foundations), thus forcing air fresh air into the wall cavities. This method is highly efficient and used by many professionals.

If your walls have insulation

If your walls have some form of insulation, such as pink batts, then an internal wall drying solution can still be used; it’s just a different process.

If your insulation has a paperback, the same system explained above can still be used. However, if your insulation has a foil back or styrofoam material, it simply can’t be successfully dried.

In these cases, your restoration operator will remove the wall’s external facade, remove the insulation, and start the drying process from here.
